Key Takeaways:
- Teva launched the first FDA-approved generic GLP-1 indicated specifically for weight loss, generic Saxenda (liraglutide), on August 28, 2025.
- It carries the same weight-management indication as brand Saxenda, unlike earlier generic liraglutide approvals that were limited to diabetes.
- Teva has not published a price for the weight-loss generic; other makers (Hikma, Meitheal) have since entered the market, which should pressure prices over time.
A First for Weight Loss Generics
The FDA approved a generic liraglutide injection, the generic version of Saxenda, for adults with obesity or overweight with weight-related medical conditions, and for patients aged 12 through 17 with a body weight above 60 kg. It is the first generic GLP-1 cleared for weight management rather than diabetes alone.
"With this approval, and by launching a generic for Saxenda (liraglutide injection), we will provide patients in the U.S. the first ever generic GLP-1 product specifically indicated for weight loss," said Ernie Richardsen, SVP, Head of U.S. Commercial Generics at Teva.
Unlike previous generic liraglutide approvals that were limited to diabetes, this version carries the same FDA indication as brand-name Saxenda: weight management.
What It Could Mean for Cost
Teva has not publicly announced a price for its generic Saxenda, so the exact savings are not yet clear. For reference, brand-name Saxenda runs roughly $1,300 to $1,800 per month without insurance.
Generic liraglutide for the diabetes indication (generic Victoza) has been available at lower prices. In a recent check, a GoodRx coupon cut generic liraglutide prices at a Midwestern Walgreens to around $226 for two pens. But the weight-loss-dose product is separate, and most insurance plans, including most Medicare prescription plans, do not cover liraglutide for weight loss.
Teva offers a savings program for its generic liraglutide that can bring eligible commercially insured patients' cost down to as little as $20 per prescription.
Why This Approval Took So Long
For more than 15 years, Novo Nordisk held exclusive rights to liraglutide, so no generics could enter the market until key patents began expiring in 2025. The regulatory pathway for complex injectable medications like GLP-1s is also demanding.
In 2019, Novo Nordisk and Teva settled patent litigation over liraglutide, licensing Teva to launch a generic. That settlement allowed Teva to launch generic liraglutide for diabetes in December 2023. The weight-loss indication required separate approval, which came on August 28, 2025.
More Competition Is Coming
This approval set the stage for broader generic competition. Since then, Hikma Pharmaceuticals and Meitheal Pharmaceuticals have launched their own FDA-approved generic liraglutide versions, expanding availability. As more generics roll out, prices are expected to become more competitive.
The broader GLP-1 market remains dominated by newer medications like semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro), which will not face generic competition until their patents expire in the late 2020s and early 2030s.
Navigating Insurance and Access
Insurance coverage for weight-loss medications remains complex. Plans that do not cover weight-loss medication (including most Medicare prescription plans) may not cover liraglutide for weight loss (generic Saxenda), even if they cover liraglutide for type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular risk reduction (generic Victoza).
If you are currently on brand-name Saxenda, ask your doctor whether switching to the generic makes sense. In most cases no dose adjustment is needed.
